One month in Lithuania: my volunteering adventure in Širvintos

About four weeks ago, I packed my bags and set off for Širvintos, a small but warm town in Lithuania. My aim was to contribute to volunteering projects and to improve myself by meeting new people and cultures. As I write these lines, I realize once again how right a decision I made.

The thing that surprised me the most in the first days was the sudden changes in the weather. A day that started out sunny in the morning could suddenly become rainy or windy in the afternoon. But I got used to it in a short time; I guess even this was part of this journey.

The volunteering activities were quite diverse. We did a painting project where we colored the entrance walls of our center. The colorful and energetic walls that emerged made everyone who came smile. We also experienced the unifying power of sports here: we organized volleyball matches and I refereed for a while. The excitement of the teams, the competition and the feeling of friendship at the end were really nice.

During this process, I had the opportunity to make my first presentation to Erasmus+ students. I was a little nervous before the presentation, but I started to enjoy it the moment I started. The participants’ interest, feedback and the conversations afterwards motivated me greatly. After the presentation, I also organized an origami workshop. We all made colorful butterflies together; the peace of those moments and the joy of producing together are indescribable and experienced.

I was lucky that my experience here coincided with the Easter period. On this occasion, we painted eggs and made an Easter tree. I got to know the Lithuanian culture more closely and these special moments spent together were engraved in my memory. We also visited another volunteer center in Telsiai. Observing the activities there and getting inspired was very valuable for me. I was especially impressed by the atmosphere of the center and the work done.

Finally, the pinata event we organized in front of our center was very fun for us adults as well as for the children. It was a colorful, noisy and laughter-filled day. I am happy to be here. Yes, sometimes dealing with young people can be tiring, but their energy, meeting new people and learning about different cultures motivate me again every time.

If you are thinking of volunteering, don’t hesitate. Such experiences not only provide an opportunity to help others; they also transform you. It is a great way to get to know yourself, explore your limits and get out of your comfort zone.

This month in Lithuania has brought me a lot. I am just at the beginning of the journey but I can already say: I am glad I came!
